Program Recommendations
Programs for U.S. High School Students
The Experiment in International Living - The oldest exchange program in the US with a wide variety of summer abroad destinations for high school students. Programs are 3-4 weeks in July with 10-16 students. Modest scholarships may be available.
The Experiment Digital - Virtual exchange programs with students from the MENA region on a specific theme, like STEAM or community service. Weekly engagement in virtual platforms for 6 weeks between May and July. Requires application but is free.
Youth Ambassadors - Department of State-funded exchange programs to various locations in Latin America for 15-17 year olds. Programs focus on leadership and community service and include 2-3 weeks abroad before students implement their own project at home. Application required by all selected participants receive full scholarships.
Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program - Four-week program wherein a group of U.S. and Iraqi students develop leadership and peace building skills. Program is fully funded by the Department of State.
Undergraduate Study Abroad for U.S. Students
My hands-down #1 recommendation for study abroad programs is SIT Study Abroad. Within their portfolio, I particularly like the International Honors Program (IHP) programs, which start in the U.S. and then progress through three locations based on one theme (comparative across 3 continents in one semester, social justice focused, emphasizes student-generated research)
Programs for Students from Outside the U.S.
The Experiment Digital - See above. For students from the MENA region.
Youth Ambassadors - See above. For students from various countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
